As more and more online HD video services come online, it becomes increasingly important to compress the video efficiently to enable high quality streaming. This talk will present the basic techniques used in modern video compression, with an emphasis on the two next-generation standards HEVC and VP9. Topics covered include YUV colorspace, block-based partitioning, intra prediction, motion compensation, entropy encoding (binary arithmetic coding).

Pieter Kapsenberg is a senior engineer at Google with over a decade of experience in image processing. Currently he designs digital hardware video encoders and decoders, with a focus on the VP9 video coding standard. Prior to joining Google, Pieter worked for Intel where he implemented numerous different video standards in hardware which are now found in most major Intel CPUs. He participated in JCT-VC standard committee which developed HEVC, and was the sole author of Intel’s state-of-the-art video analysis software package. Pieter holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Oregon State University.
