FAQ
Which browser do you recommend for viewing videos?
We recommend using Google Chrome or Safari.
How are the videos encoded?
Videos are encoded in MP4 format. If you’re having trouble viewing the videos make sure you have the right plugin installed for your browser.
Some videos have a ClassX button. What is ClassX?
ClassX is an interactive lecture streaming system developed in the Electrical Engineering Department at Stanford University. ClassX videos require the Flash or Silverlight plugin. Visit the ClassX page to learn more about it.
Videos are not sized correctly, what should I do?
If the video you’re trying to watch does not display correctly in the light-box, please right-click the “Play Video” link and choose “Open-link in a new tab” – this should resolve the light-box sizing issue. This problem is not reported on Chrome, but has been reported in Safari.
I click on the link, but the video does not play, what am I doing wrong?
It is highly likely that you’re not doing anything wrong. If you’re using Firefox you should be aware that Firefox does not support streaming of MP4 content. Firefox will instead download the video before playback will commence. This will result in a “white box” appearing where the video should be. The video will begin playback after a while. We recommend using Google Chrome to view Stanford Talks. If you are not using Firefox, but are seeing a white box where the video should be playing, you can right-click the “Play Video” link and choose “Open-link in a new tab”. This should open the video for streaming in a new tab.
I don’t see a button to play the video for some talks. Why?
Most content on Stanford Talks is open to the public. However, access to some content is protected at the request of the presenter or event organizer. When viewing the pages for these talks you will see a “LOG IN” link where the button to play the video should appear. To access that content please please visit the Secure Login page.
